How it started

Dr. Tiffany Slater started HR Tailor Made out of a need to find joy in doing human resources work. She had been unhappy in her previous HR roles, despite having worked in the field for almost 30 years, from intern to the highest level in an organization. She knew she needed to use her HR skills and, as she began her consulting work, she decided to create a joyful work experience for others, both for the employees of her clients and for her own team. She realized she wanted to be an entrepreneur, a desire that runs in her family (her parents, brother-in-laws, aunt, and uncle were all entrepreneurs), though she never thought she would pursue it. Her first client was an early childhood center that needed an employee handbook and school HR experience. This experience, which she was able to do from her bed while on leave from surgery, made her realize she truly loved being a consultant because her clients listened to her, unlike in previous corporate roles.

How it's going

Currently, Dr. Slater describes being "most scared" because she needs to hire someone to train them in preparation for growing the business, so she can then find new clients. She already has team members, but adding more before securing new clients is a scary prospect. However, she is most excited when people know about HR Tailor Made without having met her, or when clients come to them without remembering how they found out, indicating strong branding and a sound reputation. The business operates as a completely remote team, and as a consulting company, it has not been impacted by tariff changes. Dr. Slater notes that policy changes are truly impacting everyday Americans, small businesses, and nonprofit organizations. She believes that crippling nonprofits, which help the least fortunate, makes the country worse. She advocates for a "human first approach" for policymakers. She also advises small business owners who are struggling to "get a team" of experts to handle tasks they are not skilled in. For organizations without an HR expert, she emphasizes the need for one to navigate changing policies, legal compliance, and difficult employee situations.

Why Revenued

Dr. Slater found Revenued through another organization or membership. She had previously spoken to a representative and was curious about the process, even though she didn't need funds at that time. When she later experienced a cash flow problem last year and was facing issues with payroll and financial commitments, she remembered her earlier conversation with Revenued. She quickly applied online, qualified, and received the funds she needed, which she found "incredibly helpful." She describes the application process as "easy" and "seamless." She would recommend Revenued to other business owners, stating, "It's easier than getting a home loan. It's easier than getting a loan for your car. It's easier than, you know, going to the bank... because it is so seamless. It's online. And I believe all I had to do was connect my bank account so that they could see what my cash flow was to see what I might be able to pay back. And I would say if you are strapped for cash and you know you just need something to get over the hump, take out a Revenued loan. It's really easy."
